Storm Assistance
8/1/2022 (Permalink)
If you have suffered damages from a storm, then you need to be aware of FEMA. Likewise, this is a resource everyone in Southern Oregon should at least be aware of when a storm is on the way. It is the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and it provides assistance to people who's homes were damages after a natural disaster. The agency provides other types of support as well, including:
- Emergency assistance
- Financial assistance
- Miscellaneous support
If you are going to take advantage of this resource, you need to understand what kind of support you can receive from them.
Emergency Assistance
When the flood waters are on the rise, you should not expect immediate help from the agency. The agency focuses on providing assistance when flooding is over, but they still can help you in the form of resources and partners. The agency has a mobile app while can provide information about emergency shelters and evacuation guidelines in your local area. If you are in need of immediate help, you should call 911 instead or your local emergency management agency. FEMA partners with certain emergency relief companies, and may be able to help you receive the support you need.
After the Storm
When the disaster is over, this is the time when The Federal Emergency Management Agency can really provide you with support. After you apply, an inspector will evaluate how severe the damage you suffered is. This should never be a substitute to your own insurance coverage, but rather a resource you use in addition to it. Along with helping you recover financially, the agency can provide medical and dental services, as well as covering funeral costs. FEMA cannot take care of all storm reparations, so it might be beneficial to research a private reconstruction company too. With the right help, you can repair and move on from any disaster that affected you.
SERVPRO of Medford/Ashland is one such company with all of the expertise and equipment needed to recover from a major flooding or natural disaster event. We suggest that you contact us in order to have a complimentary Emergency Readiness Plan (ERP) prepared and on hand just in case you ever experience the type of event where it will come in very handy. The fact is that you are more likely to have water damage from things that are in your control.
Some examples of water damage that can be prevented are:
- Having roofs checked regularly for cracks, one inch of rain can weigh up to 5 pounds, which can cause a lot of strain on a buildings roof
- Pipes and drains should be checked regularly for wear and tear. A crack as small as ? inch can release about 250 gallons of water a day.
- Sprinkler Systems need to be checked for signs of rust or damage so that they function correctly when you need them.

Jackson County home or business have mold??
5/19/2022 (Permalink)
In a typical water flooding event, if not mitigated quickly, mold can spread through a business location or a home in as little as 48 hours.
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to mitigate your mold infestation.

4/29/2022 (Permalink)
Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
Smoke and soot facts:
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
- Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Grants Pass/Central Point will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Ready for BBQ season
4/12/2022 (Permalink)
With nice weather and summer holidays finally approaching, it’s no secret that many people will be spending their weekends and days off outside. In addition to opening up the pool and walking on the beach, BBQ’s are also going to become one of the more popular activities at homes and even businesses across the way. But, a nice grill session can turn into a devastating, even deadly fire in a matter of minutes -- which is why safety should also be a top priority during this time! To ensure you’re well prepared for a potential BBQ disaster this season, we’ve compiled a few tips and guidelines to follow.
Know Your Grill’s Safety Zone
Firing up the grill, for many, is a great experience that allows you to bring out your inner chef, while also catering to guests of your party. But far more goes into the process of cooking than just flipping a few burgers. For starters, make sure your grill isn’t positioned anywhere near your home, on a dead patch of grass, or under low-hanging trees. Regardless of what kind of grill you’re using, one spark or flame too close to another object is all it takes to start a fire. For good measure, keep your grills on cement fixtures or away from anything flammable
Keep Fire Extinguishers Nearby
Whether or not this is the first time you’re using the grill this season, make sure it’s still in operable shape for a cookout. Thoroughly clean the grates and inspect the gas line for leaks. Should a fire start from faulty lines or too much grease, you’ll need something to help extinguish the issue. A small fire extinguisher is always great to keep nearby, and can suppress an issue before it becomes unmanageable and damaging -- just make sure your fire extinguisher is appropriately rated for this particular situation.
Of course, there are always circumstances that you’re either not prepared for, or not fit to handle on your own. If you do happen to experience an issue in which your home is sustaining fire damage, immediately call your local fire department to have them take control ASAP.
SERVPRO of Medford/Ashland has been helping the community get back on their feet after fire damage for years. When something goes wrong, you’re going to need a company who can make it right. Preparing To Escape a House Fire
11/16/2021 (Permalink)
A fire escape plan can be an essential element of protecting what really matters.
Preparing a fire escape plan for yourself and your family is important whether you live in Medford or Ashland, Ore; or anywhere else in the country. Your dwelling may be a single-family home, a multi-family home or a high-rise apartment, but whatever the case, the routes to safety should be planned and practiced by all inhabitants.
Planning for a Safe Getaway
No matter your type of home, it is important to have functional smoke alarms on every level. In a fire emergency situation, an alarm can provide the two minutes that the Red Cross estimates are needed to get out safely. Make sure that all family members recognize the sound of the alarm and know how to call 911. Design and regularly practice your fire escape plan.
• In single-family homes, identify at least two exits from each room. Preselect a gathering point outdoors. Once outside, call 911 if the emergency is real.
• In multi-family homes, identify two exits from each room, and place escape ladders in second floor rooms. Plan a meeting place outdoors. Call 911 if it is an actual emergency.
• In high rises, head for the interior fire stairs if possible. If it is too dangerous to leave via the interior stairs, find a safe place, and close all doors. Call 911, and hang a white sheet outside your window to alert the fire department to your location if it is not a drill.
• Never return to the dwelling to retrieve people, pets or belongings.
• Download and complete the Red Cross’s emergency escape plan. Share it with everyone in the home.
Though it is regrettable that items of monetary or sentimental value can be lost in a fire or a beloved home can be damaged, restoration and remediation services can go a long way in helping with material losses. A fire escape plan can be an essential element of protecting what really matters.
Getting Rid of Shower Mold
11/16/2021 (Permalink)
Mold growth is extremely common in residential bathrooms. The warm, wet, humid environment that your bathroom can create makes for an ideal fungal breeding ground. Shower mold is especially common, since this is where most of the excess moisture tends to collect. Follow the steps below to help resolve any mold issues your bathroom in Medford or Ashland, Ore; may be experiencing.
Cleaning a Moldy Shower
There are several tried and true cleaning methods to help get rid of shower mold. Here's how to perform one of the most effective techniques:
- Create a safe, non-toxic cleaning solution using equal parts white vinegar and water.
- Pour this solution into a clean spray bottle.
- Generously mist down the moldy areas. Make sure you're creating an even layer without over-saturating the tile. If puddles are forming in the shower basin, you're using too much cleaning solution. Let sit for 5-10 minutes.
- Use a clean, dry cloth to wipe the solution off.
- The mold should easily come off with the mixture. You may need to use multiple cleaning rags, depending on how large the affected area is.
- Use a kitchen sponge or scrub brush to attack any remaining mold patches. You can use a toothbrush to get rid of mold growing in the shower grout or caulking.
- Dry the area completely using a fresh, clean rag or cloth. Make sure to remove all excess moisture to prevent further mold growth.
Preventing Bathroom Mold
Keeping your bathroom clean and dry is the best way to prevent black mold from appearing. Every time you take a shower, you need to remember to completely wipe down the tile, tub edge, basin, grout, and caulking. Mop up any puddles on the floor that may have been left behind. To reduce condensation buildup, you can open a window while you shower or keep the bathroom door cracked.
Shower mold is an extremely common occurrence. Luckily, it's just as easy to remedy using the above technique. If this method doesn't work for you, or the mold growth is spreading out of your control, you need to contact mold remediation experts immediately.
How Can You Secure Your Property
11/11/2021 (Permalink)
After a fire at your property in Southern Oregon, you may have more to worry about than fire damage. Security at a fire-damaged property can be difficult, when often areas exposed by fire make any locking doors defunct; security systems may be too damaged to operate. You may have to contend with looting, or with animals entering open areas.
The Best Steps to Take
While your property won’t be wholly secure until it’s been completely restored and all security systems effectively replaced, you can still take precautions to prevent vandalism and other issues. Those precautions include:
• Boarding up any openings in the building. If the building doesn’t provide easy access, many looters and vandals will give up before they might get caught trying to pry the boards free. This can also help keep animals out.
• Installing motion sensor lights. Putting motion sensor lights around the property in the short term can stop many animals and looters in their tracks, and will usually scare both humans and creatures away.
• Removing anything that survived fire damage from the property. This should be a major part of fire cleanup anyway, but if you remove anything surviving of value from the property, this removes the temptation to loot as well.
• Putting up temporary fencing. Temporary fencing such as chain-link fencing gives you the option to at least put a padlock on the fence, and add an additional deterrent to invasion.
While none of these methods are foolproof, they’re still a good stopgap in the short term while you take the chance to assess the fire damage and make plans for cleanup and restoration. No property owner deserves to lose what things of value they have left after already suffering the devastation of a fire. Take precautions, and secure your valuable property before human or animal invaders can do additional damage.
How To Cover Your Expenses After a Fire
11/11/2021 (Permalink)
Every business in Medford and Ashland, Ore. needs a plan of action to deal with the aftermath of unplanned fire damage to its physical space. It is essential to have business interruption insurance to recover from the following:
Aside from the cost of cleaning or replacing damaged items, insurance can help your business pay for additional expenses vital to its survival.
Relocation
Fires can cause multiple levels of damage that extend far beyond property damage. For instance, the fire restoration process can prevent your business from operating in its physical space for weeks or months until it is safe to re-enter. Insurance can pay to move your business's essential equipment to a new location until it can return to its original space.
Rent
Aside from paying the rent for space at a temporary location, you will be obligated to continue making rent or mortgage payments for your fire damaged space while it is being restored. The financial responsibility of carrying two spaces is not tenable for most businesses, but it may be necessary. An interruption insurance policy can cover the costs of maintaining both spaces during the recovery process.
Taxes
When an unplanned fire suspends a company's revenue, it is still liable to pay its taxes. Insurance that can cover these payments will prevent costly penalties and keep your business in good standing with the internal revenue service.
Payroll
Through no fault of their own, your employees may find themselves out of work. Unemployment insurance might cover salaries due to various causes of job loss. However, it will not cover lost wages resulting from temporary business closures after fires. Fortunately, interruption insurance can supply the funds to continue paying your employees and provide peace of mind.
Unplanned business interruptions can halt your revenue flow. Fortunately, Medford and Ashland, Ore. business can stay afloat if it has insurance to cover its expenses.

BBQ SAFETY TIPS
4/1/2021 (Permalink)

Changes in General Liability Insurance Regarding Sick Buildings
2/10/2021 (Permalink)
Be Aware Of The Changes In General Liability Coverage And Terms Often Used To Exclude Mold Claims.
An increase in mold insurance claims and litigation has led to changes in most commercial general liability policies over the years. Primarily, these changes have been instituted to reduce premiums and eliminate most mold coverage. Typically, these issues are grouped in with sick structure exposures, a term used to describe normal business risks and contractor responsibility. As a commercial operator, you should be aware of the changes in general liability coverage, and terms often used to exclude mold claims.
1. Pollution Exclusion
Most insurers will view a mold claim as an environmental or toxic tort claim, meaning that mold falls under the pollution exclusion. While there are arguments to be made about the validity of mold as a pollutant under the standard definitions, there is currently no dissenting or judicial opinion as to the applicability of the exclusion for the claims.
2. Business Risk
Many mold insurance claims are rejected because they are deemed a business risk issue, meaning that the fungus is a result of poor quality or craftsmanship. These exclusions lay the blame on property owners or contractors, and stipulate that the responsibility for repair is theirs.
3. Fungi or Bacteria Exclusion Endorsement
The Fungi or Bacteria Exclusion Endorsement is an amendment to many commercial general liability policies. This endorsement excludes the costs associated with mold cleanup and remediation. It also eliminates personal injury.
4. Limited Fungi and Bacteria Coverage Endorsement
While most policy changes have meant bad news for mold claims, the Limited Fungi and Bacteria Coverage Endorsement means that property owners may have some relief from mitigation costs. This endorsement may cover some of the expenses associated with mold remediation in the Jackson County, Oregon area. However, the aggregate limit is likely lower than previously offered.
Before submitting mold insurance claims, review your policy and take note of any of the above changes. While insurers are looking for ways to reduce exposure to fungi and bacteria demands, there may still be endorsements that can help. Reach out to your insurance company and discuss the coming changes and your concerns.

Ashland Fire Clean-up
2/9/2021 (Permalink)
Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Medford/Ashland will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.

What Happens After a Home or Business Fire?
2/9/2021 (Permalink)
What Happens After a Home Fire?
If you have never had a fire incidence in your business or home, it is important to be repaired because no one is immune from it. Fire in home or fire in business can be caused by a variety of things, which include the utility room, among many other causes. The problem is not whether there was a fire in business or fire in home, but how to recover from commercial fire damage. Many business or homes have been destroyed by fire damage, not because fire suppression did not take place, but because the owners did not know what to do after the fire.
What happens after a fire in home or fire in business?
The most common thing that takes place after a fire in home or fire in business is the alarm, which notifies everyone in the building that there is fire. If for good luck the house is fitted with modern firefighting tools such as fire sprinkler system, it could help in the fire suppression effort and reduce the extent of fire damage.
The firefighter's department would also respond promptly to help put off the fire. Their work is vigorous and would cause damage such as breaking through doors and windows to access the fire areas. Water will also be pumped into the building, causing floods all over the floor.
What next after fire department effort
After the fire has been put off, it is when you will realize the extent of the fire damage and that caused by the firefighters. Fire damage, Soot damage, the smoke damage, smoke smell and water damage are evident. Fire damage restoration effort must begin immediately, or more damage could occur. You must look for a competent and reliable fire restoration company to undertake this exercise. It is not something that you can handle with family members or your business staff members.
Professional fire damage restoration
Once the fire has been put off, you must not wait for long before starting to put things in order. Using a good fire restoration company, you will be able to get professionals who are trained and experienced in handling fire cleanup services. They first begin by assessing the level of commercial fire damage. They board up the windows and doors that had broken by the firefighters. The importance of boarding up is to keep off intruders who could access and steal your items. Professional commercial fire restoration ensures effective board up services.
What to expect from the professional fire restoration company
If you hire a professional commercial fire damage restoration company, you can be assured of their services. These professionals use a plan to do the fire cleanup and prevent further damage that could be caused by water or the restoration process. All the items that could be repaired are salvaged and taken to their facility for specialized repair. Other items that require cleaning such as carpets could also be taken up for proper fire cleanup.
Flood water is drained from the rooms and soot damage, and smoke damage is handled effectively. Commercial fire damage lead to soot damage that results from the burning items, which cause ash and dust on the walls and vents. It has to be cleaned up to remove the dust and ash, which will allow for the repainting of the walls. You will also need to clean up smoke damage because the smoke smell is absorbed in all the porous items in the building. This smoke smell is cleaned up through deodorization and other methods.
The importance of using professional fire cleanup services
Hiring professional commercial fire damage restoration is essential because it ensures effective removal of soot damage, smoke smell, smoke damage, board up services and fire damage restoration. Finding the right fire restoration company would ensure a speedy restoration and allow you to go back to your normal life. It is important to seek the help of professionals in matters that you cannot handle on your own such as commercial fire damage because it could save you time and money.

How to Prevent Moisture from Entering your Building and Causing Damage
2/9/2021 (Permalink)
Rain and flooding from a major storm in Jackson County can result in costly damage to the interior and exterior of your business. In order to protect your business, it can be valuable to know how to prevent moisture from entering your building and causing damage.
1. Create a Physical Barrier
In order to decrease the likelihood of water and mold damage to your building, it can be helpful to put a barrier between your building and the elements. A building envelope acts as a water-resistant cover and protects your business from strong winds and heavy rains. In order for the envelope to be of use, it’s often important to make sure the envelope is securely placed around your building before a storm hits.
2. Inspect Your Building Before the Storm
Rain damage can occur seemingly without warning, and it may be necessary to contact storm restoration experts to fix the damage. However, it’s often preferable to prevent damage from occurring in the first place. By inspecting your building before a storm, you are likely to notice if there are any loose shingles, small holes or other areas where water may be able to enter your building. Inspecting the building frequently will allow you to make the necessary changes that can help to prepare your property for a disaster.
3. Clear and Reposition Gutters
If your property’s gutters are clogged or are positioned too closely to your business, the likelihood of water damage and mold growth increases. In order to avoid black mold growth and other issues related to water damage, it can be useful to clear your business’s gutters before a storm. Moving your gutters to ensure the flow of water is not directed at your building’s foundation can also be helpful.
Though storms have the potential to cause major issues for a business, preventing moisture from entering the building can make damage less likely to occur. By creating a physical barrier, inspecting your property before a storm and clearing and repositioning your building’s gutters, you can help to keep your business safe from rain damage.
Become Informed about FEMA's Various Types of Assistance
2/8/2021 (Permalink)
Does Your Jackson County Business or Home Have A Mold Problem?
2/4/2021 (Permalink)
If You See Signs of Mold, Call Us Today – 541-773-3740

A Fire raged through a home early one September morning destroying a good portion of the home and just about all the roof and attic have been deemed a total loss. At this point we are in full swing of the rebuild.
SERVPRO of Medford/Ashland was recently called to facilitate the damaged area clean-up and rebuild the house to new condition. The homeowner was very grateful that our company helped guide them through this tough time in their lives.
Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within a fire damaged home, causing hidden problem areas and odor.
There are two different types of smoke – wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Medford/Ashland will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Generally Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by Evaporation of Material Rather Than From a Fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

BBQ Safety Tips
2/4/2021 (Permalink)
To learn more about how SERVPRO of Medford/Ashland can assist in your time of need, give us a call today! 541-773-3740
Extracting water from hardwood floors

Water Removal / Water Extraction
The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We use powerful pumps and vacuum units to quickly remove hundreds or thousands of gallons from your property, which helps prevent secondary water damage and mold growth.
Water Removal Equipment
- Moisture detectors, hygrometers, and other meters measure the extent of moisture saturation.
- Infrared cameras may be used to find “hidden” water behind walls and ceilings.
- Submersible and gas-powered pumps are used for continuous pumping of high-level water.
- Truck-mounted and portable extraction units perform efficient water removal.
Emergency Water Removal
Our highly trained technicians will begin the water removal process almost immediately. Depending on the amount of water, we may use powerful submersible pumps in addition to industrial strength, wet/dry vacuums. Removing most of the water helps reduce drying time and helps prevent secondary water damage and mold and bacterial growth.
- Remove Excess Water
- Use Submersible Pumps and Industrial Wet/Dry Vacuums
Flood and Water Restoration
2/4/2021 (Permalink)
What To Do After Flooding

- Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
- Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying in summer.
- Remove colored rugs from wet carpeting.
- Remove art objects to a safe, dry place.
- Gather loose items from floors.
What NOT To Do After Flooding
- Don't leave wet fabrics in place. Hang furs and leather goods.
- Don't leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet carpet or floors.
- Don't use your household vacuum to remove water.
- Don't use television or other household appliances.
- Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet, and keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging.

Fire Restoration in Jackson County
2/3/2021 (Permalink)
The active wildfires here in Southern California are increasing their impact as growing Santa Ana winds add fuel to these devastating blazes that are encroaching in our area. According to the New York Times, new fires broke out in Malibu on December 7, with at least 96,000 acres already burned in the Ventura area and 116,000 acres in Los Angeles County. Evacuations have closed hundreds of schools and forced 200,000 of our neighbors to seek safety. The “Thomas Fire” in the Ventura area continues to burn with the aid of strong winds. This fire has caused the closure of the 101 freeway and a boil-water advisory was issued for Ventura County. Santa Ana winds The Santa Ana winds that are enabling the fires to rapidly increase their reach can have speeds in excess of 60 miles per hour. They are not expected to diminish until Friday into Saturday at the earliest. The National Weather Service has warned of “very rapid fire growth” in this area. SERVPRO Meteorologist Lela Davis said that the Santa Ana winds were already very dry when they reached the Southern California valley, allowing them to quickly pull moisture out of vegetation, increasing the risk for wildfires. For the first time ever, a purple wind warning was issued for today under the color-coded system used to advise about high winds. This purple warning pushed wind expectations from the “high” category to “extreme”. Ready to help Here at SERVPRO of Medford/Ashland we are monitoring this wildfire situation closely. Our thoughts are with those neighbors who may be put in harms’ way during this event. In many cases, a wildfire can result in a total loss for a home or business, but in others it may be a partial loss, or can result in mild smoke damage. If your home or business is affected by a wildfire, SERVPRO of Medford/Ashland is Here to Help®.
